Topic > Toxic Love: An Analysis of the Destructiveness of Sex

Sex is understood as a wonderful subliminal experience shared between a man and a woman, however when the sexual act is abused it can turn into an addiction, a trap that leaves his victims unsatisfied and constantly seeking to quench their lustful thirst. Lustful thoughts could drive a person crazy if they can't find a way to release the sexual tensions they feel. In Ernest Hemingway's novel, The Sun Also Rises, the author illustrates the destructiveness of sex through the twisted romantic relationships between characters. The network of relationships that occurs between certain characters affects each of them in their own way. Sex has a negative impact on all characters because none of the characters' true desires are fulfilled. The injury Jake receives during the war leaves him unable to have sex, which puts a strain on his love life. Jake and Brett are in love, but Brett is a nymphomaniac who cannot live without sex and Jake, unable to have sex, cannot satisfy Brett's need for sex. Due to his incompetence, Jake's self-confidence and masculinity decline, forcing him to start drinking all the time to drown out his pain and forget what he misses. Brett's only true desire is to be with Jake, but sexual addiction prevents her from having a relationship with Jake and so she, like Jake, begins drinking and having multiple affairs to find satisfaction. This shows that Brett is dissatisfied with her life even though she lives an exciting and adventurous life that she never seems to be completely satisfied with; therefore she is destined to lead a life in continuous search for fulfillment. In 1 Corinthians 6:16, the Bible talks about how when two people have sex “they become one body.” Cohn consistently... middle of paper... fits perfectly. She still needs to be satisfied, so she continues to let her greed and sexual addiction lead her to becoming fully satisfied. The destructiveness of sex is clearly shown through the relationships Mike, Cohn, and Jake have with Brett. Sexual incompetence and frustration cause Jake to drink, feel insecure, and miss the opportunity to have a relationship with Brett. Brett's need for sex keeps her from being happy and satisfied. Sex turns into a curse that binds Cohn to Brett, causing him to become extremely jealous of the other men in Brett's life. Mike starts drinking due to his boyfriend's promiscuity. Brett's addiction to sex makes her a careless, selfish, and greedy person who uses people to get what she wants. Instead of bringing love and beauty into the characters' lives, sex brings nothing but pain and destruction.
