The class structure in the 1920s was synonymous with prejudice. The 1920s were known as a time of wild excess and big parties with enthusiasm born from the ashes of wars in American history. It was a historical period in which rapid materialism and narcissistic ideals grew uncontrollably, and they were the days when Jay Gatsby, illegally, achieved success. Having social classes was the same thing as segregation, except through economic position, both instill injustice within social standards. The class structure was used to describe the difference between the new money and the old money. The Great Gatsby by Francis Scott Fitzgerald, written in the 1920s, highlights the division between social classes and the reasons for their separation; the novel also highlights the daring tasks that the bottom of the social class is willing to undertake to climb the ladder. The poor are bold enough to engage in illegal acts to achieve success. However, even successfully, they have not yet been completed. The class structure is represented in this novel through Myrtle who is the poor, Gatsby – the new money and the Buchanans – the old money. These characters are divided through wealth; the poor lacked money while old money was born in it. However, the difference between the old and new money is that the new money must work to achieve wealth, this is why it is so difficult to climb the social ladder. The poor in the 1920s lived in the American dream. The American Dream is the ideal of a happy and successful life: owning a home, having more than you need, and having a family.
