White collar crime is not a crime in its own right, but rather a criterion that must be met for a crime to be considered white collar crime; (Blount, 2002) hence why corporate crime is also considered white collar crime. At the same time, white collar crime and corporate crime can be seen as distinct criminological categories, however, to reveal this, this essay will first explore Sutherland's definition of white collar crime and the concerns with this definition of white collar crime white. . We will then discuss the modification that had to occur with the definition of white collar crime given by Sutherland to establish a distinction between white collar crime and corporate crime. Accordingly, this essay will show how and to what extent white-collar crime and corporate crime are distinct criminological categories. Before Edwin Sutherland emerged with the term white collar crime, the criminologist was only interested in crimes committed by people from the lower classes. ; crimes of the powerless. These crimes include burglary, theft, vandalism, as well as more serious crimes. The researchers also wanted to find out the reasons why these individuals committed crimes. Their findings led them to conclude that this was due to the pathologies of individual offenders, as well as poverty and deprivation. However, this was disputed by Sutherland, who argued that people from the higher social classes are also involved in criminal behaviour.
