The Chicago Cubs are an interesting part of Illinois history, even if they aren't always successful. The history of Wrigley Field, the famous players and the stories behind every game are why Chicago loves the Cubs. It's the feeling of friendly boundaries when you walk through that door. It's jumping out of your seat when the ball is hit out of the park. It's about simple things like singing the 7th inning stretch with all the other Cubs fans around you. Rooting for the underdog is special, and that's why Cub fans are so loyal. The history, players and baseball stories of the Chicago Cubs are the reasons it is an important part of Illinois history. Chicago Cubs baseball dates back to April 25, 1876, when they played the first game in the history of the Chicago National Club League. However; they were not known as the "Cubs" at the time. Generally, they were known as the “White Stockings”. But a select few called them “Colts” or “Orphans.” The team only played in five different locations in 1800 due to the lack of places to play baseball at the time. As the years passed, the league became popular, becoming one of the first sports dynasties. Chicago won six of the first eleven inaugural National League championships (Cubs Timeline). In 1902, Frank Selee began managing Chicago to debut his managerial career. Just like the managers, the name has also changed. A local newspaper first wrote about the nickname “Cubs.” The name grew among people over time and was officially adopted in 1907. The next year, Victory came to the city of Chicago. The season was filled with some of the greatest baseball players of the old days.
