Millennial: Mil-len-ee-uh l (noun) a person born in the 1920s or 1900s, especially in the United States. If you look up the word millennial in a dictionary this is the definition you will find. To be more realistic, this is the definition you will find by typing it into the dictionary app on your smartphone. Our generation is full of millennials. These so-called millennials are classified as people born between the years 1980-2000. Millennials have also been classified as narcissistic, lazy and materialistic. Joel Stein talks about these narcissistic, materialistic, technology-addicted millennials in his article titled “Millennials: The Me Me Me Generation.” In contrast, there is an article written by Kali H. Trzesniewski and M. Brent Donnellan titled “Rethinking “Generation Me”: A Study of Cohort Effects from 1976-2006” that talks about how these millennials are actually not that different from generations precedents. Joel Stein based his article on knowing the hard facts that millennials are truly narcissistic, materialistic, and fame-obsessed young people. As for how millennials are more narcissistic than the previous generation, Steins uses the example of how in the 1950s people displayed wedding photos and military photos in their rooms creating a more family-oriented environment. If you looked around your home now you might see the traditional wedding or school photo placed on the mantelpiece, but you are more likely to see "selfies" of that person or that person with their friends or pets. Stein includes the statistic that narcissistic disorder is three times higher among today's youth than it was in the 1920s. He believes this is the result of millennials who...... middle of paper ...... their generation is the main driver of modern technology. People have always been obsessed with fame and self-centered, but never had the opportunity to share it with the world. In today's society with modern technology people can take pictures of themselves all day and then log into their Facebook and Instagram accounts and post those photos for all to see. People can go to Twitter and post a tweet about their favorite celebrity and follow the people they idolize with the simple tap of a finger on an app they've downloaded to their smartphones. These actions are why millennials come across as narcissistic compared to previous generations who did not have this technology available to use. Who's to say that if Instagram existed in the 1950s, people wouldn't be uploading photos of vacations, breakfast, and everyday life???
