The 14th century was a time of chaos and caused various problems. In “The Death of Socrates,” Socrates quotes the following from Plato: “I tell you that virtue is not given by money, but that from virtue comes money and every other good of man, public and private. This is my teaching, and if this is the doctrine that corrupts the young, I am a spiteful person. ("Greed often leads to evil. Money is often what creates greed, yet is it the only factor? The corrupting power of greed and wealth is depicted as a recurring theme in Dante's Inferno and Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. They use specific ways and examples to demonstrate their point that greed leads to evil. Both Dante and Chaucer describe members of the magisterium of the Roman Catholic Church as manipulating the religious beliefs of their followers for the their personal monetary advantage, however, money is not always the root of greed shows love and jealousy as complicating factors that also produce greed. As the suicides in Hell and Nicola in The Millers Tale depict, greed can also abound in forms of jealousy and love. Throughout the Inferno, Dante suggests vices that are naturally instilled in us through his journey into the layers of hell Circle of Hell up to the Fifth Circle of Hell. In Canto 7 of the Inferno, Dante speaks of the avaricious people including the ecclesiastics, popes and cardinals. While these important figures influence the growth of the Catholic Church, they do so in a selfish way where it is not simply the church or the parishioner who gains from the relationship, but they also benefit... middle of paper... .... lon wasted his money since he was so greedy to buy Allison. His greed for Allison leads him to do careless things, especially like wasting her money. Furthermore, buying someone's love is superficial. The fact that Absalon knows that Allison is married and does these actions makes him evil because he disrespects her and John intentionally as he is greedy to make love to Allison. He is a character similar to the miserly people in Dante's Inferno who spend their money irresponsibly, as shown in canto 7. Virgil describes the actions of popes, cardinals, and clergymen in a negative way. In particular he says: "It was squandering and hoarding that robbed them of the high world and dragged them into this brawl." (Dante. VII. 38. 58-59). Throughout their lives they accumulated, spent their money carelessly, and squandered it. Add the final sentence
