Reed Richard's desire to learn began at an early age, when his mother, Evelyn, died. From that time, his father raised and educated him, recognizing his son's intellect. At the age of 14, Reed was already taking college-level courses and had attended four universities earning various degrees before leaving his teens. Victor von Doom, unlike Richards, had a tragic childhood. He was born in Latveria, a small European town raised outside of Hungary. Victor barely knew his mother, Cynthia, a witch who had called upon the demon Mephisto for power, who raged out of control before she was finally killed by a soldier. Before he died, he asked his father, Werner, to protect young Victor from Mephisto. Eventually Victor's father, a doctor, was treating the king's wife. When Werner failed to cure his cancer, Vladimir blamed him for his wife's death and Werner eloped with Victor. Werner died from exposure to the cold while protecting his son. Before he died, Werner placed Victor in the care of his best friend, Boris, and tried to warn his son of the fearful life he predicted he would fall into, but he died before he could make Victor understand. After discovering his mother's mystical artifacts, Victor trained in sorcery. He began a yearly contest against Mephisto, attempting to free his mother's soul. By the time he was a teenager, he had also become a scientific genius and used his inventions to wage a one-man war against the monarchy of Latveria, always one step ahead of them. His genius was also known in America and he was invited on a scholarship to Empire State University in New York.
