According to (Collins & Lapsley, 2008), the economic cost of smoking was estimated at $31 billion. The Australian Department of Health (2014) believes that leadership is key to improving the health of your country by taking action to inspire Australians to improve their health. They also believe that health begins when you are born, offering everyone key opportunities to improve throughout their lives (MOH, 2014). The Australian strategy to decrease tobacco consumption is to increase taxes and public education (Roberts et al., 2009). It is important to empower Australian people suffering from such a common disease because it can be easily prevented. Greater public education means a higher level of understanding of how harmful tobacco is to your body and how serious the addiction is. In addition to increasing prices, supporting smokers and limiting tobacco advertising, the program also predicts a decrease in smoking among Indigenous people, the cause of approximately 20% of Indigenous deaths (MOH, 2014). A strategy where we educate everyone to a level that allows them to take control of their own health and make their own decisions is a successful strategy for the Australian healthcare sector.
