Topic > The importance of maternal education - 1353

Mothers who receive a higher level of education may be able to provide better protection and health care for their children than those with a lower level of education. Without proper nutrition and healthcare before and after birth, children will develop poor cognitive, motor and socio-emotional maturity. Studies show a distinct relationship between mothers having higher maternal education and children's physical growth. With a higher level of education, women will have greater knowledge and understanding about how to increase the overall health and well-being of their children. Note that after the birth of the child the first few years are the most critical in the child's life. According to Semba, et al., 2008, children who do not receive proper care cannot maximize and develop as functional adults due to stunting during childhood. He further stated that the consequences of stunting could negatively affect an individual's quality of life. It is critical to understand the implications of stunting on a child's development and the importance of maternal education in reducing its impact. Current studies show that a higher level of education can reduce stunting in children by 5%. Further studies show that increasing years of schooling has a greater impact on children's health and nutrition. In Kenya, for example, an increase in years of schooling for mothers increases their knowledge in choosing and providing better health care options for their children (Abuya, Onsomu & Moore, 2011). Studies have also compared a parallel relationship between maternal education and income level. Mothers who are able to obtain a higher level of education have greater knowledge...... middle of paper...... children to improve their growth and development. Although it is established in this study that maternal education can prevent stunting in children, it should be kept in mind that these studies are not conclusive in their findings as internal and external validity could not be achieved in some cases. For example, what defines wealth in some countries may not be the same determinant of wealth in another country. A mother may be able to care for her child with the information and education she has and not have much wealth but the essential nutrients or medications considered necessary for the development of a healthy child. Additionally, any study done should be collected and repeated a couple of years after the mother has started receiving more adequate education to see the impact or lack thereof on the child's development..
