This happened after a successful attack in 1885, commanded by Napoleon III. It was actually a colonization of the countries Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. Both nationalists and communists fought against French domination. Countries retained their own authorities, like kings and emperors, but only in theory. The French ruled them and they were just the public faces. A man named Phan Boi Chau (1867-1940) created a nationalist reform organization. His intention was to overthrow French authority. Later in 1927 the Vietnamese Nationalist Party was formed. Following the advance of the Nationalists, the Communists created the Indochinese Communist Party in 1930.
