Landscape urbanism brings together two previously unrelated terms to suggest a new hybrid discipline. While there has been much support for landscape urbanism ideas within the design and planning professions, there remains a considerable amount of skepticism and even hostility. This article reviews criticisms of landscape urbanism and argues that many of these criticisms are valid. This article will conduct a critical analysis of key concepts derived from the landscape urbanism movement. From the analysis it will be evident that landscape urbanism is a concept that requires significant refinement to contribute to a productive change in urban design thinking and practice. First appeared as an academic program, at the University of Pennsylvania (Spencer, 2010). Landscape urbanism has since emerged as a concept described by Corner (2006) as an alternative approach to urban practice. The concept marks the dissolution of old dualities such as nature and culture and dismantles classical notions of hierarchy, border and center. Unlike the overly simplified view of the city as a static composition, with the planner as the responsible figure, landscape urbanism sees the emerging metropolis as a thick living carpet of patched and layered accumulated systems, without any singular authority or control. In many ways landscape urbanism can be seen as a new response to traditional urban design and planning to operate effectively in contemporary cities. A positive attribute of landscape urbanism is its ability to address issues related to landscape ecology. Most of the design schemes are consistent with what Cranz and Boland (2004) suggest as a new park typology labeled “sustainable park” that has emerged since the early 1...... half of the paper.... ..n S Hashim (ed.), CASE: Le Corbusier's Venice Hospital and the Mat Building Revival, Prestel, pp. 118-126.Cranz, G & Boland, M 2004, 'Defining the Sustainable Park: A Fifth Model for Urban Parks', Landscape Diary, vol. 23, pp. 102-120.Corner, J 2006, 'Terra Fluxus', in C Waldheim (ed.)
