IntroductionThis article focuses on understanding adolescent well-being in the lesbian and gay (LG) stepfamily from the perspective of family system theory. Family system theory emphasizes that family members are interconnected with each other and that the environment influences the quality of interconnection between members and in the family system. Furthermore, the concepts of boundaries, transformation rules and variety are used to describe the factors that influence the interaction between the environment and family system and the quality of interconnection between family members. Unlike the traditional meaning of “family,” for LG stepfamilies, the family structure and the meaning of family are unclear; therefore this type of ambiguous description can impact relationships, both between family members and outside the family (Stewart, 2007). Furthermore, some research confirms that LG parents and their children face greater stress from society. Stress can affect family members' well-being and interactions. Therefore, it is necessary to identify factors that influence the family system and the quality of interaction between members in order to develop strategies to help resolve family problems. The purpose of this article is to discuss the elements that influence adolescent well-being and parent-adolescent interactions in the LG stepfamily. Researchers have identified that LG stepfamilies experience social pressures, such as homophobia, stigmatization, social and legal inequality, and violence toward gays and lesbians (Lott-Whitehead & Tully, 1993). However, this article mainly focuses on the influence of societal stigma and social support on the family system as numerous studies support that there...... half of the article ......there are not many challenges coming from the environment, from The theory can be used to understand some elements that influence the interrelationship between environment and family and their influence on the well-being of the adolescent. The theory also explains the importance of interactions between family members; in particular, the quality of the parent-child relationship influences the adolescent's well-being. Because adolescents from LG families face challenges arising from the environment, social support, positive parent-child relationships, and coping skills are vital components to consider when implementing an intervention to help children who feel stressed or depressed to cause of social stigmatization. The strengths and limitations of the theory promote future research to study LG stepfamilies from a systems theory perspective and encourage researchers to reflect on the meaning of the LG stepfamily.
