The right to bear ArmsThe Second Amendment of the United States Constitution declares that all law-abiding citizens have the right to purchase and bear Arms. This means that firearms will be allowed in citizens' homes for use in self-defense against intruders. State governments have the power to take this amendment one step further by allowing open or even concealed carry of personal weapons. Our modern society has fought endlessly over the meaning and practice of this amendment, and some citizens believe this amendment should be removed from the Constitution. I believe that this amendment represents the greatest danger and, if modified, could cause a domino effect on the other amendments. The debate on this amendment begins with the literal interpretation of the amendment itself. The amendment reads, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed” (Chemerinsky 26-28). The meaning of this quote in our modern society is yet to be understood. The first theory is that as citizens we must be ready, with weapons in hand, waiting to defend our nation from internal and external threats. While other citizens argue that this amendment refers exclusively to property and personal protection. I believe that until we are all able to share an equal interpretation of the amendment, we will not reach a meaningful agreement on the issue. Although both sides have reached agreement on stricter rules for firearm sales, very little progress has been made in reforming the issue. Selling firearms is an incredibly confusing process. Shotguns, shotguns and pistols all have individual registration and sales guidelines. Although… half the paper… fills these marks. Gun control would help keep firearms out of the hands of violent individuals, but we must exercise it in moderation and maintain the integrity of the Second Amendment. The Second Amendment has come under increasing attack in recent years, and I believe supporters of the Amendment must act now to preserve it. I agree that we need to regulate the sale and ownership of firearms more efficiently, but I cannot support the idea of removing firearms from people's homes. In our society, criminals have become smarter and much more ruthless. We cannot let them control our lives and live in fear, we must be able to successfully defend ourselves and our families. We must defend this amendment and our constitutional rights. If the Second Amendment is abolished by its enemies, then the challenge will be extended, come and get them.
