Topic > The Importance of Preventive Maintenance - 1948

Preventive maintenance can be defined as an activity performed according to a given schedule, intended to prevent failure or deterioration. These activities may include regular inspections along with resolution of any detected problems or situations and regularly scheduled part changes. Preventive maintenance involves scheduled adjustments, inspections, replacement of wearing parts, calibrations, basic cleaning and lubrication of equipment or other recommendations provided by the equipment manufacturer. These activities can help increase the functional life of equipment and help reduce deterioration of structures. No equipment should reach its breaking point [1]. Preventive maintenance is the basis of the entire maintenance strategy of every pharmaceutical industry. One of the most frequent problems PM programs can face is maintaining all equipment or parts involved in pharmaceutical manufacturing the same way. A safer path is to apply a risk-based approach that separates each piece of equipment or piece of equipment in terms of direct contact with the product and possible defects that could affect the quality of the product [2]. It is useful to apply a risk-based approach to prioritize and organize the necessary documentation. Preventive maintenance activities are most vulnerable to risks during the period of time when part changes occur, including scheduled shutdowns or special projects. There should be complete process documentation and operational procedures, including organizational policies for all maintenance activities [2]. As part of the process of developing an effective preventive maintenance program, it is also necessary to change the entire organization's mindset regarding maintenance. There are several steps involved in implementing preventative maintenance… middle of paper… what compared to very expensive unscheduled repairs that may be necessary under problematic conditions causing production shutdowns and lost revenue. Good PM saves money over the product life cycle.REFERENCES[1] Worsham WC (2005). Is preventative maintenance necessary? Reliability Center, Inc.
