A comparison between official crime statistics and the actual crime rate IntroductionI chose the title "The official crime statistics where I live reflect the crime rate actual?" This is a survey where I will have to compare the official crime statistics in my area with the crime statistics found by the UK Crime Survey and with my own research. I chose this title for many reasons. I think the gap between official crime statistics and hidden crime figures is large. I believe this is partly the fault of the police and our system. I think people in society don't feel they can trust or rely on the police enough to report all crimes. Answering the questions in my course and revealing the reasons why they do not report crimes and the reasons why the police do not record all crimes is important to improve the victim management system and reduce crime. I find it interesting and compelling. I think it is very important for society to find ways to help change police etiquette and encourage crime reporting. People may feel like they can't report crimes like rape because it's inconvenient to talk to the police about it. If research showed this, then police could be trained to treat victims more carefully. My Hypothesis I expect to find that the official crime statistics in my area do not reflect the actual crime rate. I expect this because it's obvious that not all crimes are reported to the police. Many people do not report a crime that they believe is too petty and for which they cannot gain anything by reporting it (for example, people may report a stolen car to claim compensation from their insurance). they will not have the opportunity to express their opinion. If I had interviewed a police officer, my conclusions about their involvement in the difference between the actual crime rate and the official statistics would have been different. I believe my results show very clearly that there is a huge difference between official crime statistics and the actual crime rate. I think if I showed my results most of society would be very shocked. I think many people would blame the police for this difference, however I'm not sure this blame is fair. I think that if the police read my findings they might be encouraged to be more sensitive towards victims of crime to shed the label that has been created on their attitude towards victims. However, the police may resent the public for their comments.
