During 1325 a newly homeless Aztec tribe who were driven out by the angry ruler/father of a princess they had sacrificed to the sun god, was traveling through the swamps. they saw a small island with an eagle perched on a cactus eating a snake. This was said to be a sign of where the tribe would make their new home. This new city was called Tenochtitlan. Soon this will become the capital of the Aztec empire. Tenochtitlan began with only a temple to worship the war god Huitzilopochtli and huts for tribe members. Although Tenochtitlan eventually contained up to 400,000 people, it was called the largest civilization in Mesoamerica, compared to Venice, Paris, and Constantinople. Before Tenochtitlan became the power it was at its peak, the people of Tenochtitlan had to pay homage to another larger civilization called Azcapotzalco.
