CAPOEIRASUMMARY Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art form that blends combat and dance into unique rhythmic movements. It is performed by two people and is often described as a conversation, a dialogue that takes place between two bodies. The origins of Capoeira are still debated among historians, but there are some common things that most people who study the art forms of Capoeira agree on and this discussion is based solely on those things that are common everywhere. HISTORY/ORIGIONS Thymology The origins of the word Capoeira is as controversial as the origins of the art form. There is evidence that the word derives from the Bantu word “Kapwera” meaning “Fighting”. It is a word used widely in Angola and is also pointed to as evidence that this art form may have originated from the slaves who came from Angola when Portuguese sailors took control of that part of Africa, colonized and in turn transported many of the its inhabitants in Angola. other colonies as slaves. The word could also derive from the Tupi language which referred to the low vegetation of Brazil where the game was played. There is also the idea that the word comes from the Portuguese word capão which is a bird cage used to keep capons (male chickens that are castrated when young). This suggests that slaves took these chickens in their cages to the market and spent their time playing capoeira. There is another etymological connection with the Kikongo word "Kipura" which in the Congolese cultural context referred to the sweeping movements made in the martial arts art.
