The Great Journey to Freedom The twentieth century was a great and extraordinary time for Canada on its journey to gain independence from Great Britain. Before Canada began calling for freedom, it was part of the British Commonwealth. Great Britain controlled many countries, but Canada's actions in the twentieth century made Great Britain feel as if Canada needed its own identity. The years 1900-1929 saw Canada take its first steps towards independence from Great Britain. Their involvement in the First World War, particularly the Battle of Vimy Ridge, made Canada appear to be a mature nation in the eyes of other countries. More than 10,000 brave Canadian soldiers were killed and it was also the most successful battle of the First World War. Seven Canadians earned the Victoria Cross for their bravery in the face of German fire. Soon Canada began to ask for more freedom and it was granted. From 1930 to 1959, Canada had achieved the ultimate in independence from Great Britain thanks to its successful tactics in the battles of Sicily and the liberation of the Netherlands. Canada remained strong during World War II after World War I. It won the hearts of many citizens after these battles and the Battle of Sicily was Canada's best fought battle during World War II. This allowed Canada to demand more freedom from Britain, and Britain could not refuse. From 1960 to 1989, Canada wanted to change constitutional law. The amendment of the Constitution Act ensured that the British Parliament could no longer amend the Canadian Constitution. Canada could do anything without Britain's permission. It allowed Canada to vote in major decisions. And many laws were passed in favor of the Aborigines after they obtained the right to change the Constitutional Act. These three time periods in…half the paper…forgotten by the world, especially by Canadians. Works Cited “Becoming a Nation.” Canada in the making.
