Ever since I was born, I have attended St. Nicholas Serbian Orthodox Church. Many of the people who attend the church are Serbian. My mother is Serbian and I am also a proud Serb. This Easter Sunday I went to church. Also this week I took communion and confession. Christian Orthodoxy is a wonderful religion and tends to grow on me as I get older. It is an organization made up of followers of Christ. I love the songs the choir sings and the natural sound of the English and Serbian languages mixed together. The Divine Liturgy is the main service used in Orthodox Christian churches. In class we learned the six phases of worship, which take us from the profane and transcend into the sacred. Starting from opening to closing. When I attended church this week I paid close attention to these steps. The first phase of worship is opening; there we light a candle before entering the church. Followers of the Orthodox Christian faith believe in the Old Testament and lighting a candle before entering demonstrates that we are entering the Kingdom of Heaven through offerings and prayer. People who believed in the Old Testament before Christ believed in sacrificing an animal. Jesus was the last to sacrifice himself to save us from our sins, so people now no longer find it necessary to kill animals. Before entering the sanctuary we make the sign of the cross in the name of the "Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit", to prepare ourselves for entering the consecrated land. The next phase is called rapport creation; there we enter “spiritually” into the Kingdom of Heaven. At the beginning of the church our priest brings with him a censer where incense is burned to make the church perfumed. As soon as I smell the inc...... middle of paper ......n as well as English. There are three visual symbols: focal, secondary specific, and general. The focal symbol in an Orthodox Christian church would be the altar table. This is the table where the priest prepares the bread and wine during the communion service. The next visual symbol is called secondary specific and in an Orthodox Christian church it would be the icons of the saints on the holy doors separating the people from the altar. The last visual symbol is called the general symbol, which could be the church pews. The symbols not only give the person insight into the church, but can also give some understanding of the church. Serbian is my heritage, my family background, Orthodox Christian is my religion. Orthodox Christianity is a religion based on Christianity. Orthodox means righteous and Christian meaning is the followers of Jesus Christ.
