The word "power" can be linked to many different ideas. In general, power has a significant effect on different aspects of people's lives, sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse. I chose to convey power both ways through Bruce Dawe's poems "Homecoming" and "Enter without a knock" and Meryl Streep's "Women's Rights" speech. The poem "Homecoming" by Bruce Dawe conveys the concept of power through the use of various techniques. The title is used ironically because the connotation associated with returning home is generally linked to happiness, celebration and relief, however the content of the poem describes the dead and lifeless soldiers. The power of the title "Homecoming" for a poem like this makes you think one thing, but after reading the poem the reader learns another. The use of repetition at the beginning of the poem establishes the impersonal tone, the mechanical and inhuman processing of the soldiers of the past. “They are gathering… carrying… zipping… tagging” this dictates that the soldiers are categorized, it also describes the actions of the body processors. The poet once again used irony to contrast the actions of the body transformers with the inert, lifeless soldiers. “Curly heads, kinky hair, crew cuts, bald non-combs.” It once again reinforces the fact that soldiers are losing their identity and are being categorized based on their appearance, also highlighting the detached and anonymous image. The soldiers who died and are “coming” home are helpless, they were sent to their deaths by the government and had no say in the matter. The categorization of these soldiers communicates that they are powerless because they are dead. “They're bringing them home now, too late, too soon.” Through… in the middle of the paper… once again encourages the audience to think. You question global leaders: “where is the global reaction?”. He wonders why the world's global leaders have done nothing to help this cause. She wonders if it is because they are women that this issue has been overlooked. Global leaders have done nothing in their power to help their cause. He wonders why global leaders are abusing their power when it can save the lives of many. “We must speak and we must act on their behalf because they cannot, and by God almighty we can.” Streep's very serious tone reflects her true emotions about the topic. Streep is conveying the power we have that could change the lives of 11.5 million. In conclusion we can see how the concept of power can be perceived in many different ways and how it impacts people's lives.
