“The right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.” A gun license grants you the right to own and use a firearm. Gun rights advocates strongly oppose mandatory licensing or registration at the federal level. They see both as dangerous steps toward revoking Second Amendment rights. They say that with mandatory licensing or registration, a right guaranteed by the Constitution becomes a privilege granted by the government (Doeden). The issue of gun control and rights in the United States has a long history, which some consider unconstitutional, and could easily be relaxed by requiring background checks. Historically, firearms were a necessity to the story. The Ku Klux Klan, Ronald Reagan, the NRA, and much of history have all worked to control guns and gun rights. The Founding Fathers? They required gun ownership and regulated it. No group has defended the right to carry loaded weapons in public as fiercely as the Black Panthers, the true pioneers of the modern pro-gun movement. In the fight for gun rights in America, both sides have distorted history and the law, and there is no solution in sight. Opposition to gun control was what drove black militants to visit California's capital with loaded guns in hand. The Black Panther Party had been formed 6 months earlier by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale. Firearms became central to the Panthers' identity, as they taught their first recruits that "guns are the only thing that will liberate us, will earn us our liberation." In time, the Panthers' arsenal included machine guns, an assortment of rifles, pistols, explosives and grenade launchers, and boxes, and boxes, and boxes of ammunition (Winkler).
