INTRODUCTION1.1. GENERAL The swingarm design is the most common solution for rear suspension. On the one hand, the swingarm supports the rear wheel axle. From the other end, it attaches to the frame via the swingarm pivot bolt. A shock extends upward from the swingarm pivot bolt and attaches to the top of the frame, just below the seat. The original version of the swingarm consists of a pair of parallel tubes that support the rear axle on one side and rotate on the other. Steel is the material of choice for most motorcycle manufacturers today. We are designing the same with that of aluminum alloy, the advantage in this would be that aluminum is lighter than steel, so the overall weight of the vehicle will reduce and thus the efficiency will improve. Aluminum has a favorable strength-to-weight ratio. However, compared to other materials, aluminum is more prone to fatigue cracking and has a limited fatigue life. Fatigue failures that occur during typical bicycle use can have highly detrimental effects on manufacturers, resulting in costly recalls and loss of product image. But aluminum is lighter than other materials and could be used to improve the fuel efficiency of the motorcycle. Based on this, we decided to modify the steel swingarm of a current motorcycle using an aluminum alloy that is lighter and strong enough to withstand forces similar to the steel swingarm and not subject to fatigue.1.2. OBJECTIVEThe three main objectives of the project are:1. Reduce swingarm weight by using aluminum other than steel.2. Design a new swingarm that can be mounted on your current bike and meet all fatigue requirements similar to those of steel.3. To perform the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) methodology at...... middle of the document ...... the two main alloying elements in 6063 are silicon and magnesium. The full composition of 6063 can be seen below in Table 1. COMPARISON WITH OTHER MATERIALS There is a wide variety of materials used in the swingarm. Modern frames are mainly made of aluminum, steel, titanium and carbon fiber. The materials used for swing arm frames have a wide range of mechanical properties. These properties can be seen in Table 2. There is not one material in the table that has advantageous properties in each category, which explains why manufacturers continue to make frames from different materials.
