What is an acceptable amount of homework for a high school student? A student might say one hour, a teacher would say three. However, none of these ideal amounts of homework are correct as more is assigned each evening. Teachers believe this helps the student learn on a deeper level, but instead it stresses students on a deeper level. Because health problems, excessive stress, and loss of interest in the learning experience result from overworked high school students, schools must limit the amount of homework assigned to their students. Excessive stress in high school students is a concerning finding that results from too much school work. Sixteen-year-old student Bretta McCall, who has done her fair share of homework, says, “Academic stress has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. This year I dedicate twelve hours a day to schoolwork. I'm at home right now because I felt so bad from the stress that I couldn't stay in school." (MindShift) Because McCall is a high school student herself, she knows firsthand what it's like to deal with excessive amounts of work and stress. McCall deals with twelve or more hours spent working on schoolwork, which is more than any full-time job expects. The purpose of high school is to prepare teenagers for the dedication required to hold down a full- or part-time job -time. However, like McCall, many students are forced to work longer hours than in an actual job. Students are overworked and stressed, which leaves them with health problems that make them feel bad is a clinical psychologist in Maryland and public educator coordinator for the American Psychological Association As a professional on the subject, she says, “A little stress… middle of paper… work they hand out to save students and find a nice sum that actually benefits the student to help him.” they learn.
