Public speaking skills are very important for anyone who aspires to become a politician. Barack Obama, the President of the United States, is known to be an excellent public speaker. In fact, Richard Greene of the Huffington Post ranked Barrack Obama as “America's third greatest presidential orator” (Greene). In this article I will analyze Barrack Obama's speech and organizational structure. The specific speech I will analyze is the one President Obama gave at the 2012 White House Correspondents' Association dinner. In addition to giving my opinion on the organization and the president's speech, I will also give advice on what he could have done better. Organization is an important part of giving a speech and could make the difference between a great speech and a mediocre one. Barack Obama's speech was very well structured. It also seemed well rehearsed. Most of his speech was given in order of current affairs and very few topics were covered in chronological order. Obama certainly achieved his goal of getting the crowd excited to listen to his speech through the use of a very creative attention catalyst. His focus consisted of a lot of humor, but he also highlighted some of his accomplishments during his first term as president. For example, President Obama said that "this time last year, just this weekend, we finally brought justice to one of the most famous individuals in the world," jokingly followed with a photo of Donald Trump. Of course, President Obama was actually referring to the capture of Osama Bin Laden, but it was so brilliantly done that I almost didn't catch the reference. The passages in his speech were clear, however, I couldn't make out exactly what... middle of paper.. ....slows down, lowers the volume and pauses for impact Other times he speeds up the pace and raises the volume of the voice to underline a key phrase” (Gallo). key traits that distinguish Obama from other public speakers. Overall, President Barack Obama's speech at the 2012 White House Correspondents' Association Dinner was very entertaining and accomplished the goals President Obama set for himself.
