These facts address the growing problem of adolescents facing health problems. self-esteem. Low self-esteem is a mental disorder that leads an individual to have a negative body image. This can lead to the person viewing themselves as inadequate, incompetent, or unlovable (DoSomething.Org). Forty-four percent of girls and fifteen percent of boys in high school admitted to trying to lose weight. In the case of women, self-esteem is normally related to how they view their body shape, not their actual weight and size. Seven out of ten women believe they are not good enough to meet society's standards, including relationships and grades. Teenage girls who have a negative self-image are four times more likely to engage in bad activities with men that they later regret. Nearly twenty percent of all adolescents will suffer from depression before reaching adulthood (DoSomething.org). Suicide is the third leading cause of death among adolescents (Tarshis 131). What causes such low self-esteem in teenagers? There are two main issues: how others treat them and how they see themselves.
