Women have long been neglected in the field of democracy. Given that for most of history women have been considered the lesser sex, it stands to reason that they have not been fully integrated into the democratic process. Authors like Coole argued that philosophers like Rousseau had no value for women. He stated that Rousseau wanted men to be free from dependence on other men, but wanted women to be dependent on her husband. In the eyes of these philosophers, women were nothing more than housekeepers. Women's rights have come a long way, but have they come far enough? In some democracies women still have a muzzle placed on them and their opinions and it is, by and large, repressed in other democracies. In American democracy, a woman can hold office, vote, speak out, and has the same political rights as a man on paper. Many feminists still believe that women are still overwhelmed in liberal democracy. And overall it is clear that women are not respected in a democracy.
