All patients suspected of having hypertension should undergo an assessment of cardiovascular risk and target organ damage and should be educated about the condition before treatment is given or recommended (NICE , 2011). There are two main types of treatment for hypertension: lifestyle changes and drug treatment (NHS, 2012). Initial treatment of hypertension involves lifestyle changes, some of these include: quitting smoking, losing weight, drinking less caffeine and alcohol, reducing salt intake. to less than 6 g per day and by increasing physical exercise (NHS, 2011). Numerous studies have also been conducted to investigate the effects of diet and nutrition on blood pressure. It has been suggested to reduce sodium levels in the diet and increase calcium levels by taking supplements to help reduce blood pressure (Magill et al, 2003). Introducing a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, fish, poultry and low-fat dairy products has also been shown to increase levels of calcium, potassium, magnesium and reduce cholesterol levels (Magill,
