The situation began when his sister Josephine and Mr. Mallard's friend Richards visited the Mallard home. Mallard is informed that there has been a terrible train crash and her husband has been listed as a casualty. Mrs. Mallard then retreats into solitude to not only process the information she has just been given, but also to enjoy the fact that she is now free from her husband.
