Over the years, there has been discussion about the conversion of technical institutes from quarter systems to semester systems. Some people believe that a semester system will be better than the quarter system. Apparently, the Technical University System of Georgia agrees and converts the technical colleges to the semester system. Students using the quarter system must now switch to the semester system. Students will have to deal with the new academic calendar, courses, credit hours, tuition and financial aid. But will it be as easy as people think? The semester system is used by more than 80% of colleges and universities across the country (Crist). The remaining 20% are still on the quarter system. These changes will align the technical school calendar with the K-12 school systems and the GA (TCSG) college system. The trimester system was not aligned to the calendar making it more difficult for students to transfer to other colleges (Technical College System). The semester system will be better for transferring students because it will be easier and less stressful. Due to the aligned calendar, the academic year will change. Instead of four terms, the academic year will be divided into two semesters with the optional summer semester. With the semester system, classes will start early around mid-August and will also end early (semesters vs. quarters). Students generally have a major break around Christmas. This will give the scholar time to spend with friends or family during the break. Students will have a summer break if they do not attend during the summer. Classes of the quarter system will begin at the end of September and will last until mid-June. There is a break in December and a short break in March with the quarter… halfway through the essay… adapting to the semester system is not a terrible idea.
