At the beginning of "The Tempest", Bobinot and Bibi (father and son) go to town to get some shrimp for Calixta (wife and mother) because Bobinot knows that he likes her. Meanwhile, Calixta is at home doing housework while a bad storm rages outside. She hears the thunder begin to rumble and goes out to retrieve Bobinot's underwear and is greeted by her old lover, Alcee. They come into the house and talk for a while, and end up having an affair on the couch. After their passionate exchange, Alcee leaves before Bobinot and Bibi return home. Once they return, Calixta worries about them and gets angry at them for being out during the storm. When she sees the shrimp that Bobinot brought her, she is excited and happy. To end the story, she cooks shrimp and everyone eats them and laughs as if everything is completely normal. In "The Storm", Kate Chopin uses the symbols of the storm to represent the passion between two people and the infidelity of a wife and her lover, the color white to represent innocence and purity, and laughter represents the ecstasy and thrill, all to portray the contrasts of love between two couples. One of its symbols, the storm, represents the passion between Calixta and Alcee. “The touch of [Calixta's] warm, throbbing body when [Alcee] had thoughtlessly drawn her into his arms, had aroused all the old-time infatuation and desire for her flesh” (Chopin 82) shows the passion of Alcee's eternal love and desire for Calixta. “The rumble of thunder was distant and fading. The rain beat softly on the tiles, inviting them to drowsiness and sleep. But they dared not give in” (83). This represents the passion previously shared between the two lovers. But they didn't give up completely, because that... middle of paper... themselves, and when the three sat down at the table, they laughed so much and so loudly that anyone could have... I heard them all the way to Laballire” (84). This laughter portrays the emotion of a happy family, where everything is normal and wives do not cheat on their husbands. In "The Storm", Kate Chopin uses symbolism to show the contrasts of love between two couples. Chopin contrasts Calixta and Alcee's adultery with the purity of Calixta and Bobinot's marriage. He uses the storm to represent the passion and infidelity between Calixta and Alcee, the color white to represent Calixta's innocence and purity, and laughter to represent ecstasy and thrill.
