Topic > School Board Meeting Report - 1680

On Monday, October 14, 2013 at 7:00 pm, I attended the Bradford Area School District School Board meeting at Floyd C. Fretz Middle School in group instruction large room. This meeting was important for the teachers, students and schools in the district. It provided information related to the classroom material and a perspective on what situations I might experience as a future teacher. The meeting began when school board members entered the large group teaching room and took seats at a slanted table on the audience side. The school board is made up of nine members elected by the community. The members are as follows: Paul Ridley (President), Pat Vigliotta (Vice President), Helen Cumminskey (Secretary), Carla Manion (Assistant Secretary), Timothy Bean (Treasurer), David Feely (Board Member), Keith Hatch (Board member), Shane Oschman (board member), and Joseph Troutman (board member). Three board members were missing; however, due to the seating position, I couldn't see who was missing. Furthermore, the member did not show up and left before others could address him. Also present at the meeting were Samuel Johnson (human resources director), Katy Pudy (superintendent), all school principals and vice principals in the district, and teachers from local schools. The first part of the meeting was to recognize the three board members with an award from the PA School Boards Association. This award is given for the first eight years on the board and every four years thereafter. The award recipients were Mr. Troutman, Mr. Ridley and Mr. Vigliotta. In class, we discussed the fact that most of the board members are upper-class white males. Looking at this... half of the document ......d that parent-teacher conferences are underway and a conference on child abuse will be held. The child abuse conference could have a big impact on me as an educator because we learned in class that you are a mandated reporter. This means that any suspected abuse must be reported; the teacher is also protected. The school board decides to hold these conferences to protect staff and students. As you can see, the school board handles many issues from budgets, to tenure, to performance scores, to conferences. While this document did not cover the entire meeting, it summarized what had happened and what effects it would have on the teachers. Decisions made, no matter how big or small, can influence how and what task a teacher performs. The school board meeting was interesting because you got to see how the changes might affect you personally.
