Plastic Surgery: Should It Be Banned? Some people's obsession with plastic surgery is obviously getting out of control. It starts with fixing or correcting just one thing, but then it quickly escalates and before you know it, a face that was once all flesh turns to plastic. According to a study conducted by Nigel Mercer (2009), “since 2003 the number of official cosmetic surgery procedures has more than tripled to 34,000”. The two reasons why plastic surgery should be banned are the high health risks and the added pressure it puts on people to look perfect. One of the main reasons why cosmetic surgery should be banned is because of some serious and overlooked risks that patients may encounter when put under the knife. To be more precise, a procedure that may seem harmless and basic can lead to as many negative effects as a serious one. In “Clinical Risk,” Mercer (2009) states, “All cosmetic treatments are medical interventions, and every medical intervention has a complication and failure rate.” Paraffin injected into the face of people undergoing Botox, for example, can overtime spread into unwanted spots that would cause the face to sag, contrary to the purpose of this procedure. Sometimes the negative effects are not seen immediately, but over the course of a lifetime they become more noticeable as you undergo more serious surgery the risks obviously increase dramatically. Large blood loss is also a serious threat in such operations. You can simply die from excessive bleeding even after the operation, which means that you are not only in danger when you are under the knife, but also when you are under irons. you have finished the procedure (whether it is a success or not). Additionally, statistics show that most people that even though a large number of people undergo one surgery, a higher percentage get a second of those same surgeries performed later. because I wasn't satisfied with the results the first time. It is this factor that helps and causes this unhealthy obsession. In addition to numerous health risks, unnecessary social pressure also adds to the list of reasons why plastic surgery should be banned. Instead of spending thousands to hide their flaws, people should learn to love them and live with them, as they are what essentially make them truly unique..
