The Love of Food George Bernard Shaw once said "there is no love more sincere than the love of food". Food and eating often bring with them a sense of community, a sense of happiness, and a sense of fun. With eating, however, comes many basic social standards that, regardless of the situation, people try to follow. What to eat, where to sit, who to sit with, are all questions asked at every meal, and especially in a university environment, they are quite important questions for how a person believes they are perceived. around 11:15 a.m. Thursday and I was on my way to the Hecht-Stanford Dining Hall at the University of Miami. It was a beautiful, sunny September morning and, even though it was early for lunch, there were a fair amount of people coming into the room. You had to wait in line to swipe your stick card, but the line to get into the dining room was quite short. While waiting in line, I could see two different types of people standing together; people who came in groups as well as several people who came to the hall alone. While most people who came to the dining hall did so in groups to create a sense of community, the people of most interest were therefore those who came alone. There are countless reasons why a person is in the dining room alone: their schedule conflicts with those of friends, they want some quiet or personal time, or they simply have no one to eat with but themselves . No matter why they came to the dining room alone, those who were alone lacked that sense of community and were likely looking for togetherness in another kind of way. In line I noticed that there were two people who were alone. Closest to the cash register was a male student...in the center of the paper...on the table, regardless of whether he was using and/or watching television. The boy in the gray t-shirt, for example, had his laptop out while he ate and was reading the news from the CNN website. The girl in the brown sweatshirt, however, had her phone on the table and occasionally sent a message, checked Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and then continued eating. All these actions that those who come to the room alone do are perhaps things that make the person feel less alone. InevitableIt is inevitable that every now and then we find ourselves in a situation where we are left to eat alone. Understanding that there are always others who have experienced the same or similar situation will help us remember that even in moments when we feel alone, we are often in excellent company.
