“Désirée's Child” is a story of mixed feelings. It is an intriguing, captivating and sad tale that reflects his experience among the French Creoles in Louisiana (Chopin). I used “sad” because it shows the level of hatred that white people have towards black people. The story is about two families from Louisiana: the Valmonde and the L'Abri. The story focuses on human relationships; the lives and characters of both family members are subtly portrayed in comparison. The story is about love, slavery and racism. The story describes the hypocrisy of patriarchal society, gender conflicts and the injustice of racial prejudices. Throughout history, racism victimizes everyone without equivalent consequences. The story is full of ironies. The narrator uses symbolism and irony to convey the themes of half-breeding, racial hatred, unequal gender roles, and social scale. Irony and symbolism are also used to enrich the story, captivating the reader's mind until the end. At the beginning of the story, the kind of love that exists between Armand and Désirée can never be overlooked. They share love; beautiful, generous and smiling. According to the narrator, "the passion that awoke in him that day, when he saw her at the gate, swept away like an avalanche, or like a prairie fire, or like something rushing headlong over all obstacles." (Chopin, 708) Initially Armand did not know about his hidden origin, this makes him careless about his identity. “What did he care about a name when he could give her one of the oldest and proudest in Louisiana? He ordered the corbeille from Paris and held off as patiently as possible until it arrived; then they got married.”(708). Despite the intensity of Armand's love at the beginning,...... middle of paper... of mixed origin, he would not hate his wife. The story goes that he pulled the letter out of the same drawer where he had kept Desiree's since their courtship. He had to go to the drawer often because the narrator says it was "a tiny bundle of letters" (711). By carefully reading the final part of this story, you can easily find the right answer to the theme of this passage which says "love or race?". “No matter where you come from, no matter your condition, we are one and therefore we live as one.” This is a song I learned from my country, Nigeria, that envelops and narrates the information that the story conveys to the audience.
