A 28-year-old woman was diagnosed with endometriosis. Distinguish between endometritis and endometriosis. What is the difference in the presentation and pathophysiology of the affected organs? What would you tell this patient in terms of treating endometriosis and what effects might she suspect? What is the endometrium? The endometrium is the mucous membrane lining of the uterus that increases in thickness during the later stages of the menstrual cycle. The endometrium thickens as it prepares to accept an embryo at conception (Cornforth, 2014). The endometrium and myometrium are usually resistant to infection due to a barrier formed by the endocervix that prevents ascending infections (Grossman and Porth, 2014). What is endometritis? Endometritis is an inflammation of the endometrial lining of the uterus that may involve the myometrium and parametrium (Rivlin, 2013). Endometritis occurs when the cervical barrier is compromised following an abortion or postpartum (Grossman and Porth, 2014). There is an increased risk of endometritis following childbirth if the woman has had chorioamnionitis during labor, had a caesarean section, or required manual or instrumented removal of the placenta (Grossman and Porth, 2014). Endometritis is usually not a serious condition and will resolve if treated with antibiotics (Stang, 2012). Prophylactic antibiotics are usually administered before and after abortion for the prevention of endometritis (Grossman and Porth, 2014). Antibiotics are also prescribed when products of conception or the placenta are retained and a curettage procedure is necessary (Grossman and Porth, 2014).
