Topic > Social Reproduction - 1509

The growth of capitalism and the decline of public support for social reproduction along with cuts to social services in Canada have led to many problems in the privet industry. These cuts leave families struggling, and while the family who cares for her, who most of the time is a woman, is struggling, they are also the ones struggling with greater responsibilities in the private sphere of life. However, the home is not the only place that deteriorates when cuts occur. When the individual struggles in the privet sector, the public sector, along with employment and work, also suffers the consequences. Although women tend to take care of the home, they contribute their skills to capitalist society, which means they now work two jobs. They take care of the home and continue to do work in the public aspect of life. Until improvements are made in both the private and public sectors through social reproduction, many areas of Canada will continue to suffer. The book Social Reproduction focuses on specific issues that are happening in Canada. Chapter four is specific to the topic of social reproduction and the problems it causes for Canadian individuals, as well as how unions are working to change government to better help the Canadian people. I will focus on how chapter four, entitled Bargaining for Collective Responsibility for Social Reproduction by Alice Wolff, deals with the material in question and also whether I believe Wolff presents the material with a well-mannered argument. I will begin by examining the problems Wolff presents in this chapter, move on to the difficulties he is causing individuals, and conclude with a critique of the chapter. Social reproduction for Alice Wolff is an important issue that is... ... middle of paper ...... would bring a real-life situation at hand for those reading this topic for the first time. I like how the entire chapter focuses specifically on Canada, which gives us Canadians reading it an awareness of where Canada stands on these issues and where perhaps we need to go. Another area that I think could have spent a little more research on would have been how social reproduction differs between the different cultures we have represented in Canada. Canada in particular has many different cultures and nationalities represented throughout; it would have been interesting to see how things differed from each culture. Overall I think Wolff did a great job with the topic and I agree with what he said and how it is important to spread this message to others so that hopefully soon we can find a way to help relive the tensions between work and private life.
