Throughout my childhood I have always been pro-choice and have always preached the motto "your body, your choice." But living in New York State I've learned that this isn't always the case. Prostitution is defined as “the practice or occupation of engaging in sexual activity with someone for a fee” (Merriam-Webster). This is currently illegal in New York State and if found guilty of this you can be punished from 3 months in prison and a $500 fine to 8 years in prison and $5,000. This to me is completely absurd and exaggerated. As adults in today's society we should be able to agree to make their own choices and do what they want, as long as it doesn't harm anyone. When you raise the issue of legalizing prostitution you will spark controversy, no matter who. you're with. The main topics cover areas that concern most people, but are not well informed about how something can be easily prevented in many ways. Usually the first concern will most likely be the ongoing problem of human trafficking and violence against women, that with legal brothels traffickers can get away with much more than they already are, and women will be more likely to be treated in a sense that they are just goods on the market to be sold again and again. Then, when this is discussed, it will be discovered that many New York state residents believe that HIV/AIDS will become another riot in Manhattan and surrounding dens. And the grand finale of the debate is always about how the money and the taxes that we would impose, apparently, will never be seen by the New York State government and will regenerate in the illegal markets that we are trying to take it from, and it helps the state. .. middle of paper... due to the incubation period even though she is an HIV positive candidate. According to Jeffrey Barrows, a healthcare consultant, this can be very bad for the workers' potential clients. “The average prostitute serves between 10 and 15 clients a day. This means that as the test becomes positive and the results become known, that prostitute can expose up to 630 clients to HIV” (Barrows). But at the same time, prostitutes can also be exposed. If a customer enters the brothel looking for paid sex, he is swabbed with the oral HIV kit and is positive but during the incubation period he risks transmitting the virus to the prostitute even if his test is negative. So, due to the lack of technology to identify HIV more quickly, this will always be a big topic of New York State Department of Public Health and state officials.
