Langdon and Sir Leigh Teabing use their ekphraseism interpretation of the work to convince Sophie that da Vinci was promoting the belief that Mary Magdalene and Jesus were married, thus making her the "Saint Grail" (Brown 243-245). They first convince Sophie that the disciple immediately to the right of Jesus is a woman (Brown 243). However, studying the painting it is difficult to determine this because many of the characteristics have worn away over time, making impossible to know what the original image looked like. Teabing points out "that Jesus and Magdalene are dressed as mirror images of each other" (Brown 244). viewers cannot be sure that the disciple is Mary Magdalene or that the use of colors was intentional on Leonardo's part. The chalice symbol and the letter “M” are also discussed. However, as before, it is impossible to know whether these whether they were created specifically by Vinci or whether they were a natural part of his painting.
