Topic > Today's Homework Stress - 639

In today's world, education is more important than ever, and with education comes homework. However, many teachers assign too much homework, which makes students extremely stressed. Additionally, some participate in sports or after-school activities, and some have part-time jobs where they must work, which adds further stress to already overworked students. Piles of homework can cause students so much stress that it affects them mentally, physically, and emotionally. Stress can cause students to get colds, stomachaches, high blood pressure, sleep disorders, and/or anxiety disorders (Menninger and Dugan). Many students today report more anxiety due to stress than child psychiatric patients in the 1950s. In a 2006 survey of 1,300 students at a public high school in Needham, Massachusetts, it was found that 58% of students surveyed reported between a lot of stress and extreme stress due to homework (Bennett and Kalish). Many students nowadays have so much going on that it is difficult for them to go home, only to have to finish five to six hours of homework. This, with the added effects of after-school activities and technology, only adds to the stress on students. Michael Nagel, an associate professor at the University of the Sunshine Coast, says homework has no scientific benefit and may even be harmful to a student's brain. “The adult brain does not fully mature until the third decade of life (a person's thirties), and too much stimulation could cause unnecessary stress to the student.” An analysis conducted by Pearson showed that the number of hours spent on homework ranged between ten and sixty-five hours per week, with females scoring higher on hours of homework, stress...... half of the paper ..... .and management skills and encourage them to get enough sleep, exercise often and have family meal times with their children. In adolescents, parents should pay attention to stress-related behaviors such as cutting or depression, and also observe parental pressure. In today's era, students are facing the tug-of-war situation of too much stress. Should students really be subjected to this kind of stress due to enormous hours of homework? Students go to school between six and seven hours a day. Should they really be given homework that takes all night to complete? Dr. Michael Nagel says too much stimulation can be harmful to a student's brain. If the brain doesn't fully mature until the third decade of life, then do we really want to subject the brain to the amount of stress and stimulation that homework causes? We really want to potentially damage our brains?
