This final exam essay explores the content of Hillary Clinton's speech at the 2008 Democratic National Convention. The examination of the speech will be conducted through the critical analysis of 4 central areas; first, Hillary's speech was appropriate and clearly articulated for the audience, second, I will analyze 3-5 aspects that helped or hindered her regarding nonverbal and verbal speech to determine if her speech was appropriate for the speech act, thirdly, I will analyze and determine whether the main points are clear, given the specific psychological context of the speech and whether they are appropriate for the purposes of the viewers, and finally, and the analysis of the evidence presented by her was appropriate given the nature of the situation and the purpose of the speech, are the speech and weather quotes offered appropriate to the context? First, the speech seemed to be unambiguously delivered and was perfectly appropriate for the audience, even with the atmosphere that hung in the stadium after losing the Democratic nomination to Barack Obama. Without a doubt, Hillary addressed the public as a Democrat and not as one devoted exclusively to her. This can be seen when Hilary states in her transcript from www.cfr.org: “Whether you voted for me, or you voted for Barack, now is the time to unite as one party with one purpose. We are on the same team and none of us can sit on the sidelines” (Clinton, 2008, para. 3). I assume her purpose was to put aside her and all her followers' emotions of losing to Barack and try to unite her and Barack's supporters. He showed full support for Barack Obama and wanted his supporters to do the same.
