The harsh treatment by the Nazis, above all, awakened Americans to the awareness to focus on improving equality. FDR in his speech focused on four freedoms: freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear. It is argued that a fifth freedom, freedom of enterprise, is present thanks to the power of big business. The speech pushed Americans to embody diversity. The idea of acceptance was spread through published writings on the absurdity of racism. Although America was determined to become a welcoming nation, the idea was hindered by a lack of trust in minorities. Race riots have made a great contribution to the increase in fear.
