The sterile area within the Airside of an airport is defined by 49 CFR 1540 as part of an airport within the ASP that provides passengers with access to the boarding of aircraft (Civil Aviation, 2009). Security within the sterile area is generally controlled by the TSA. The primary function of the sterile area is to serve as a waiting or transit area for passengers before they board an aircraft. Security restricted areas at an airport are located in the terminal area beyond the passenger screening points. Restricted areas are designed to contain passengers who have completed the security screening process and to separate screened passengers from those who have not completed the security screening process.Landside. Landside of an airport is airport property generally outside the Airside fence or other boundaries and includes public areas within the boundaries of an airport property. Landside facilities provide the public with unrestricted access to public parking lots, public access roads, terminal access roads, car rental services, ground transportation staging areas, and other travel-related facilities such as hotels and centers congresses. The security of the Landside area of an airport includes the control of the access roads to the terminal, the passenger loading and unloading areas, the short- and long-term passenger car parks, the staff car parks and all roads within of airport property, as well as ground transportation staging areas and other value-added travel facilities such as car rental services and hotels and conference centers. Terminal access roads and passenger loading and unloading areas are controlled through security patrols, vehicle time limits and stall zones that limit a vehicle's proximity to terminal areas.
