The Battle of GettysburgThe American Civil War is called the ancient wars and the beginning of the modern wars. When the Civil War began, all types of weapons were in short supply. Many soldiers were issued obsolete and near-obsolete weapons by the time of the Battle of Gettysburg. The forces involved in the civil war were clearly fighting for the rights of their people. The “Union Army” of the North wanted to abolish slavery and the “Confederate Army” of the South wanted to maintain their rights to own slaves and expand their territories. Many of the early Civil War battles provided some key advantages to the Northern forces. A couple of them were simply quantity and quality about the Battle of Gettysburg. Unlike the Confederates in the South, General Meade's Army of the Potomac had more cannons used for artillery, and was of better quality overall than those that aided General Lee's Army in Pennsylvania. Strategic/Operational Overview The Battle of Gettysburg is arguably known as, the most famous battle of the American Civil War. The Battle of Gettysburg was fought between July 1, 1863 and July 3, 1863 near the town of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania. In May 1863, General Robert E. Lee (commander of the Confederate Army) again moved his army north due to his success at The Battle of Chancellorsville. General Lee and his men were motivated and ready to move on to the next battle. General Lee hoped to pressure President Lincoln into a peaceful solution. The Union Army seemed to be in a difficult situation at this time due to Major General Joseph Hooker (the commander of the Union Army); the current leader of the Washington DC Army was relieved and replaced by General Meade.
