Topic > Smart devices and standards for communicating with each other...

The huge number of vendors, technologies and protocols used by each of the smart devices currently produced makes it difficult to communicate with each other. The lack of consensus on how to use standards and protocols to enable smart objects to connect and collaborate with each other is a challenging proposition as it will be difficult to integrate applications and devices that operate using different networking technologies and on different networks. Additionally, organizations must also find ways to ensure that smart devices can interact and work with multiple services. Other obstacles include a nascent ecosystem of IoT applications and ensuring that robust security is in place for devices to communicate, collaborate, and protect the data (device and personal) they collect. Routing, capturing and analyzing the huge volumes of data generated by the IoT ecosystem and using the information in a timely and relevant manner represents a huge challenge with current infrastructure. The sheer magnitude of data collected will require sophisticated algorithms that can sift through the data, analyze it and derive value from it for organizations. As more and more devices enter the market, more and more silos will be created making the market a complex network of connections between silos. The lack of universal standards and protocols will make it even more difficult for organizations to break down silos. Even in the case of centralized data stores, organizations will need strong security mechanisms to address security and privacy concerns. Deriving value from IoT depends on organizations' ability to collect, manage and extract data. And as more and more devices generate data, protecting it from unauthorized use and attacks will be a key concern. Simi...... middle of paper....... Beyond that, these analysts will need to have in-depth knowledge of the specific industries they operate in to ensure they use the right data to generate actionable insights The complexity of IoT will require organizations to depend on external specialist organizations to ensure intelligence from multiple sources is captured and exploited in a timely manner. Internal skills will need to be integrated with skills that specialists can bring. Specialized partners can offer solid industry and industry knowledge, technical expertise, customer service capabilities and help desk expertise. Since the IoT ecosystem includes intelligent devices and connections between them, organizations should build and leverage network-centric operations.
