The food industry has become an important part of Americans' lives by providing cheap, convenient, and satisfying food. Now fast food has expanded globally creating a global phenomenon. In Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal by Eric Scholosser, the book looks at the history of fast food and how it became a multibillion-dollar industry. Scholosser is an investigative journalist who seeks to uncover the truth about the fast food industry by researching its roots and exploring every aspect of the industry. Scholosser divided the book into two sections titled “The American Way” and “Meat and Potatoes.” "The American Way" begins with the origins of fast food in Southern California and how people like Carl Karcher and the McDonalds brothers became pioneers of the fast food industry. While “Meat and Potatoes” explores the processes, production and health issues surrounding the beef industry. He addressed the problems of the fast food industry by interviewing teenage fast food employees, farmers, franchise owners, meatpackers, and people from Germany. Scholosser's methods of dividing the book into two sections and interviewing workers from all sectors of the food industry help provide perspectives from all aspects of the industry to strengthen his argument. Scholosser argues that corporate greed and manipulation have made the fast food industry a danger to children and fast food employees. Scholosser begins by talking about the marketing tactics that fast food industries have used over the years. One of the main targets that food industries focus on is children. During the 1980s, children's advertising had grown in the fast food industry. Scholosser focuses his attention on Ray Kroc, who was the... center of the paper...... industries going as far as researching the roots of fast food and interviewing people in the industry. A weakness of the book is that Scholosser tends to focus on Colorado. While the examples he provided to support his Colorado argument were compelling, they may not represent America as a whole. Scholosser's attempt to present one city as a representation of all cities in America may be contested. However, the book is very good at confirming the reality of the fast food industry, portraying it as an evil corporation. Any audience reading this book will gain knowledge about how the fast food industries have manipulated our perspectives with their marketing tactics and how the American landscape has changed to support the fast food industries.
