The speaker, who is the lover's husband, develops a carefully constructed argument in which he tries to persuade his woman to surrender her virginity to him. In the poem “To His Demure Lover,” the speaker says, “If we had world enough, and time… I would love you ten years before the Flood, and you, if you would, would refuse until the conversion of the Jews” (lines 1 and 7-10).The speaker states that if they had all the time in the world, they wouldn't have to rush to make love as much as they would have wanted to. speaker refers to the “Flood” (line 8) as the Noah's Arc flood in the Bible, which indicates that he would love her from the beginning of time. Next, the speaker says, “Until the conversion of the Jews.” (line 10), which would indicate the end of times. In the Bible it is believed that when Christ returns for his people the Jews will convert to Christianity. Therefore, when Christ returns, that will be the end of times, the speaker he says that if they had time from start to finish, his lover would be welcome to continue being shy. In contrast, the speaker and his demure lover don't have all this time to waste, which is why he is trying to convince her. wife to give up her virginity. The speaker continues to argue that time is not in favor of his lover's nervousness. or his age. For example, he says, “But behind me I always feel the winged chariot of time fast approaching” (lines 21 and 22). In other words, he is saying that his time is quickly running out. There may be many reasons why his time is running out, but according to the poem there is one reason why he may be in a hurry to make love to his lover. The speaker says, “And yonder before us lie deserts of vast eternity” (lines 23 and 24). “Deserts of vast eternity” (line 24) expresses his worry that he will not be able to have children, which would make him sterile. As men age, their sperm count decreases more and more, which makes it almost impossible to conceive a child.
