Topic > The Origins of a Newly Formed Toxic Algae in the Ocean

Recently, scientists noticed something strange happening in the ocean that had never been seen before. Scientists recently discovered a new type of algae in the ocean that doesn't have much effect on the environment. Many say that this algae is probably a type of algae similar to those that grew millions of years ago; however, this algae is toxic. It releases terrible pungent odors that can harm your health. This algae was first discovered in Australia by a fisherman and is now ruining the Australian fishing industry by taking over the ocean. University of Queensland scientist Judith O'Neil was the first scientist to discover the origins of these toxic algae. It has been considered a fireweed as it has severely affected ecosystems throughout the ocean and dominated. However this is not the only primitive species if ocean plants are rapidly taking over. It has been said that “Evolution is in reverse” (Kenneth R. Weiss of the Los Angeles Times). Now ancient species of marine life thrive while more complex organisms and new species do not thrive in our oceans. This situation is serious as they are taking over ecosystems, completely blocking animals from sunlight, space and any other needs. There are also other species that now infest our oceans such as jellyfish and other algae species. These organisms can certainly have a negative impact on us and the vast ocean ecosystems. Since more primitive oceanic species are found more in our oceans, they pose many problems. One thing is that they are increasingly interfering with the cycle that our oceans go through and the way animals live is changing. For example, Australian algae has definitely disturbed the ecosystem... middle of paper... wastewater is sewage treatment plants or sewers, as many areas discharge sewage into the ocean. Wastewater contains nutrients like nitrogen and other things that some organisms may need to grow. This problem may seem prevalent and is very important to know about. It affects marine life in many ways, but humans are also greatly affected by this problem. People don't realize the effects this problem has on them. However the human race can always work and solve this problem. People should not throw waste into the ocean or any water source. The waste can destroy coral reefs and other important ecosystems and ruin marine life. Major sewage treatment plants should not discharge raw sewage into the ocean because it provides nutrients to harmful algae. Governments around the world should impose more restrictions on wastewater and its disposal. But if a solution is to be found, people must work together.
