I am writing to tell you more about the English course I am taking at State University. Do you know that I always have problems with English essays? Well, today I'm happy to tell you that my writing has improved significantly after taking the English 101 course led by Professor Rob Geis. I really enjoyed this lesson and would like to share with you both how I learned to use writing and reading to investigate, think, and communicate in English. The ten weeks of English lessons were interesting and fruitful, I learned many writing and reading skills which really helped me improve my English. For our Project One, we were asked to write down an experience of how we successfully convinced another person. Before I started writing, my teacher, Professor Geis, taught the class how to write rhetorical compositions, she gave us many articles that are good examples. In class we were taught rhetorical strategies for persuasive compositions: ethos, pathos, and logos. I learned that ethos means the characters of the composition, pathos means the emotions expressed by the composition and finally logos means the logic of the composition. Additionally, Professor Geis discussed with us words that people sometimes overuse, for example some people confuse the word advice with advise. In particular, I have learned that to write a good essay on persuasion, I must include the persuasion process in the essay for the audience to understand. Additionally, the professor kindly shared some model essays from other students with us. In my Project One essay, I wrote about the process of successfully convincing Mom to allow me to change majors and even study… halfway through the paper… I learned to use exploratory writing to present the results of my research and rhetorical analysis to explain the question and purpose of my research. Overall, I learned to become a better writer of research papers through Project Two. The ten weeks of English 101 classes were rewarding for me, I am now better at communicating with my audience in writing and using writing and reading to support my thoughts and ideas. Looking back on my two projects, I think I did well in building my ideas and organizing them in the essays. The areas I need to improve on are sentence structure and creative writing skills, which are things I really hope I can learn in ENGL 102. That's it for what I'll write today. I hope you are happy to hear about my improvements in English. Reply me when you're free. Hope to talk to you again soon.
