Topic > Mark Anthony - 1547

When someone's close friend is killed and he or she can't point the finger, literally, at the killer because he or she promised not to. What can he do? Well, Marc Antony accused Brutus, the murderer, using words, also known as rhetoric, as his weapon of choice. At first Brutus kills Caesar, a close friend of Antony, in fear that Caesar will become hereditary emperor of Rome and become a corrupt leader. When he kills Caesar, Brutus uses rhetoric and figures of speech to win the hearts of the people, discredit Caesar's reputation, and perhaps gain some credibility. When this happened, Brutus announced that he would allow Antony to give a speech to the people after Brutus had won over the crowd. In the speech Brutus explains to the people why Caesar was better dead than alive. This reason given by Brutus was that Caesar was too ambitious and not fit for a leader. Well, in Antony's oration he did what he promised, not point out who killed Caesar, yet he wanted his fellow Romans to do justice to Caesar and prove that Caesar was not ambitious but noble. Both men's use of rhetoric was superb and similar in such a way that both men wanted to gain control over their fellow Romans and accuse or defend Caesar's credibility. However, in Antony's oration, his slight use of figures of repetition, such as the use of antistrophe, figures of address, rhetorical questions and figures of contrast, the use of irony, lead people to the truth and they turn against Brutus by telling what was noble and ambitious. Anthony's speech to the people was phenomenal because he was the first to establish why he had come. He came for his good friend Cesare. When Antonio began his speech, he does not discredit Brut...... middle of paper ......er the crowd with examples of irony and the power of repetitions like the ones above. After great uses of irony, rhetorical question and a light use of the antistrophe that Antony said to the people who killed their beloved Caesar. Brutus' mistake was that he made vague the fact that the people of Rome barely understood Caesar. Brutus mentions how ambitious Caesar was and why he deserved to die. However, in Mark Antony's oration, he demonstrated to the people why Brutus was wrong. Antony told the people that Caesar was sad. Antony told the people that Caesar was noble. And last but not least, Antony told the people that Brutus was ambitious and immoral. Ultimately, Antony convinced the people of Rome using figures of speech. Figures of speech are so powerful that, even with odds against anyone, they can turn the tables, as Mark Antony did against Brutus..
