In my literature research review, I will examine articles that present research on the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy on those suffering from depression. The articles will discuss the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapies on people of different ages and genders. The literature will research and examine quantitative and qualitative studies and what their findings have revealed. Research on the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for those suffering from depression shows that in the short term, the effectiveness is similar in outcomes to medical interventions. However, in treating depression over a long period, cognitive behavioral therapy has proven to be successful. Additional information learned from these studies is that the use of both cognitive behavioral therapy and pharmaceutical intervention has shown some of the best outcomes. There are also the depth of depression and other mental health issues to consider before recommending cognitive behavioral therapy. The type and extent of depression and other factors will greatly influence the success of therapy. The articles contain empirical research that discusses the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapies on subjects with different variables such as age, gender and socioeconomic status. What is depression? According to the American Psychological Association (2014), “Depression is more than just sadness. Depressed people may experience lack of interest and pleasure in daily activities, significant weight loss or gain, insomnia or excessive sleeping, lack of energy, inability to concentrate, feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt, and recurring thoughts of death or suicide.
